Spot vs The Dog in front – This Is What We’re Working With

Here’s where we’re starting from.

This is ground zero of our journey with Brain Training for Dogs. Before we begin, I think it’s important to be honest about what we’re actually dealing with. No sugarcoating. No pretending everything is fine.

When I see another dog, my brain goes from 0 to 100 in about half a second. It’s not that I’m aggressive. I’m just overwhelmed. There’s too much happening and I don’t know what to do with it. So I bark. It’s my go-to.

Things that currently set me off:

  • Anything that appears suddenly in front of me
  • Cars and cyclists passing too close
  • Pedestrians and joggers on the path
  • Other dogs — obviously

Dad has tried different things. None of them have really stuck. Which is why we’re starting this journey with Brain Training for Dogs — a program built around mental stimulation and impulse control rather than force or frustration. The idea is that a mentally engaged dog is a calmer dog. That a dog who knows how to think is a dog who can choose a different response.

I want to believe that dog is me in a couple of months time. 🙏
